Shedding light on photoperiodism.

چکیده

I n mammals, photoreception is restricted to the eye. By contrast, nonmammalian vertebrates possess photoreceptors in a wide array of extraocular tissues, including the pineal complex and brain (1). The identity of the deep brain photoreceptors has remained elusive. They continue to be the least studied of all nonvisual photoreceptor classes, although their existence in the vertebrates has been known fornearly a century. In this issue of PNAS, the Yoshimura laboratory presents a study that represents a significant stride toward identifying and characterizing encephalic photoreceptors (2).

Carbon dioxide output as an index of circadian timing in Lemna photoperiodism.

Previous work on flowering suggested that photoperiodism in Lemna perpusilla 6746 involves an endogenous circadian "clock," but direct evidence requires study of an overt rhythm in the same plant. The CO(2) output rate of axenic cultures supplied with sucrose has been studied in a system using infrared analysis and monitoring four sets of cultures at once. Alternations of (1/4) to 21 hours of d...

Light signals and flowering.

Physiological studies over a long period have shown that light acts to regulate flowering through the three main variables of quality, quantity, and duration. Intensive molecular genetic and genomic studies with the model plant Arabidopsis have given considerable insight into the mechanisms involved, particularly with regard to quality and photoperiod. For photoperiodism light, acting through p...

Carbon dioxide requirements for phytochrome action in photoperiodism and seed germination.

The effect of interrupting darkness with red light in the presence or absence of 0.03% CO(2) was studied in relation to flowering of Xanthium pennsylvanicum and germination of light-sensitive lettuce seeds. The results indicate that CO(2) is essential for red light to be effective in either process.

Photoperiodism: The Coincidental Perception of the Season

Many plants use the seasonal change in daylength as a signal for flowering. Daylength sensing in Arabidopsis has now been shown to occur by an external coincidence mechanism, which operates by the circadian and light regulation of CONSTANS.

Regulation of seasonality in the migratory male blackheaded bunting (Emberiza melanocephala).

The present study was carried out on a Palearctic-Indian migratory species, the blackheaded bunting (Emberiza melanocephala), to understand the importance of photoperiodism and circannual rhythms in determining seasonality in changes in body mass and testis size in birds. An initial experiment determined the effects of duration and intensity of light on photoperiodic induction. The birds were e...
